Let’s delve into the fascinating layers of “Get on your Horses”:

This artwork features an antique print from 1898 by Brockhaus, adorned with calligraphy by Mao Zedong. The calligraphy reads: 上馬殺賊,下馬學佛 (Shàng mǎ shā zéi, xiàmǎ xué fú), which translates to “Get on your horse and kill the thieves, dismount and study Buddhism.” These powerful words inspired a multitude of monks to serve their nation.

In April 1939, Buddhist monks in Nanyue engaged in discussions about their contributions during the anti-Japanese war. The fusion of historical context, calligraphy, and visual art creates a thought-provoking narrative.

This remarkable piece is part of the series “The China Takeover.”

Ready to hang! Matted and with a frame with lead-free tempered shatter-resistant glass that gives a clear view of the artwork. The glass has been tested to withstand breakage and damage.

[Please note that the original is not very large, and the situational images are just examples of how prints of the work could be effectively displayed.]
